    The Wonderful Women of Disney

Every Disney fan knows the famous female characters in the Disney lexicon – Cinderella, Princess Aurora, Tinker Bell, Princess Ariel, Moana, Princess Tiana, and Mirabel, to name a few. But do you know the famous real-world women behind the colorful scenes and immersive attractions? From animators to imagineers to business executives, the women of the Walt Disney Company have kept the world going from the very beginning. On this International Women’s Day, let’s take a look at some of the influential females who have brought Disney magic to life.

Clockwise from top left: Alice Estes Davis, Mary Blair with Walt Disney, Leota Toombs, Kim Irvine, Jennifer Lee, Ruth Shellhorn, and Harriett Burns

Ruth Shellhorn – 1955’s Woman of the Year was an influential landscape designer in the Southern California who had major contributions to the planning of Disneyland. Ruth Shellhorn joined an all-male team who desperately needed her expertise to effectively move people around the park. To do this, Ruth designed the “castle hub” at Disneyland, with “spokes,” or paths, that lead off into the other lands around the park. Ruth worked with the landscaping designers and imagineers to implement the pathways that would easily move people around the lands and lead them back to the hub and park icon of Sleeping Beauty Castle. The hub-and-spoke design is famous throughout Disney parks and replicated at other theme parks around the world, including Universal’s newest park, EPIC Universe.

Ruth designed the transitions into the various lands as well, so that as you walk from the hub to Adventureland you feel a natural transition of space and recognize the theme in the new area without a jarring visual transition. This is accomplished by using flora that blends into the next theme, and a bit of forced perspective, so it looks seamless to guests. In Landscape and Architecture Magazine, Shellhorn is quoted as saying,

“It seems like a dream, a dream in which everyone operated to the utmost to build the park for family entertainment, which has been in Walt Disney’s mind for 20 years.”

And on the topic of doing the impossible:

“…but it was Disneyland, a sort of Fairyland, and Walt’s belief that the impossible was a simple order of the day so instilled this spirit in everyone that they never stopped to think that it couldn’t be done – they just did it and with amazing speed.”

Take a short walk around the Partners Statue at Disneyland, in the hub designed by Ruth Shellhorn:

Harriett Burns  – The first female Imagineer back when the company was known as WED Inc. (Walter Elias Disney), Harriett interviewed for the Animation Department when they “weren’t hiring women” for film animation. Instead, her first job with the company was in set design, and she was responsible for the original iconic set of the Mickey Mouse Club. Harriet also worked on many of the models and small-scale sets for the design of Disneyland and was instrumental in designing and feathering the bird animatronics for Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.

Harriett Burns also created the models for the animatronics in Pirates of the Caribbean and worked on the intricate details of these characters. Ever notice the pirate with the hairy leg hanging off the bridge? She more than likely attached each of those leg hairs to his calf, and it is said that she modeled that animatronic after the family milk man. The more you know!

Leota Toombs – Perhaps the most well-known of the original leading ladies, Leota Toombs joined the “Ink and Paint” Department of WED in 1940. Even though the Animation Dept. was primarily full of men, the Ink and Paint Division was almost entirely composed of women, affectionately known as “the color girls.” The color girls’ job was to transfer the animators’ drawings to sheets of transparent celluloid and use pen and ink to outline the characters, literally “putting down color” for the final product. Eventually, Leota made her way onto the Imagineering team, contributing to the audio animatronics for such attractions as it’s a small world, Pirates of the Caribbean, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, and Country Bear Jamboree.

Leota Toombs is probably most recognized for lending her face and voice to Madame Leota, the floating head of the fortune telling gypsy from the seance scene in the attic of the Haunted Mansion. Madame Leota recites a series of incantations recorded by Leota Toombs, such as “Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat; send in the spirits, wherever they’re at!” As you exit the ride, she also encourages you to “hurry baaaack” to visit the 999 happy haunts. Hear her conjure ghouls in the clip below:

Mary Blair – Some of the most recognizable artwork in Disney animation as well as the Disney Parks is credited to Mary Blair. Mary joined Walt’s team in 1943 and was well known for her ability to put down highly contrasting, vibrant colors that defined the classic animation style of the Walt Disney company. Her credits and concept art design include Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), and Peter Pan (1953). If you are a fan of the Disney parks, you’ll find Mary Blair’s art and influence throughout – she was the lead designer for it’s a small world, as well as Gran Fiesta Tour starring the Three Caballeros at EPCOT. One of my favorite examples of her art is The Grand Canyon Concourse Mural at the Contemporary Resort, which can easily be viewed from the Monorail.

Alice Estes Davis – Wife of Marc Davis, one of the original Nine Old Men of Walt Disney Imagineering, Alice originally wanted to be an animator but was told that was a job “for men.” She instead began work at Beverly Vogue & Lingerie House, where she became lead designer. Shortly thereafter, Walt Disney was looking for a designer for an upcoming project called Sleeping Beauty, in order to outfit a live action model used to help mimic natural movement in animation. After a fateful meeting with Disney discussing (of all things) elastic material, Walt hired Alice to outfit over 150 dolls in it’s a small world, which would debut at the 1964-65 World’s Fair. (In this project she got to work with “her hero” Mary Blair.) She also led the costuming for the animatronics in Pirates of the Caribbean, creating nearly 50 pirate outfits the ride — which put her in the same room as Harriett Burns, creating an attraction (and future movie franchise) we all still know and love today.

Kim Irvine – The daughter of Leota Toombs has continued to keep the magic alive at Disneyland. Kim began her career at the Imagineering Model Shop in 1970 where she attached feathers to birds in the Disney World version of The Enchanted Tiki Room – while her mom still worked for the company! Later, Kim Irvine served as the Art Director for Disneyland, and later held the position of Executive Creative Director of Walt Disney Imagineering until her retirement in 2025. Most notably, Kim led the team responsible for the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expansion, envisioned the repainting of Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland with deeper pinks, and lent her face and voice to Madame Leota for the Nightmare Before Christmas Holiday Overlay of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland – a full-circle moment continuing her mother’s legacy.

Jennifer Lee – After a friend called her for a little help on a project called Wreck-it-Ralph, Jennifer was asked to be part of an upcoming project about two sisters and a snowman, called Frozen.  While she first joined the team as a screenwriter, she quickly became co-director, making her the first female to direct a full-length feature film for the Walt Disney Company. Frozen went on to earn $1.29 billion worldwide and was followed up by Frozen 2 which also cleared the $1.49 billion mark. (And yes, that makes her the first female director to surpass the $1B mark for a full-length animated film.)

Beyond these accomplishments, Jennifer Lee was the first female Chief Creative Officer for the Disney Company, serving in that role from 2018 – 2024, and has creative leadership credits on other smash hits such as Big Hero 6, Moana (and Moana 2), Zootopia, and Raya and the Last Dragon. Jennifer Lee stepped down from the CCO position in 2024 in order to focus full-time on movie making, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

From the moment Walt Disney broke ground at Disneyland to the planning design of new park expansions, women have been an instrumental force in making magic at the Disney Company since the 1940s. Whether it’s designing costumes, building audio animatronics, or creating storyboard for the next record-breaking movie franchise, the passionate women behind these scenes and stories continue to bring our imaginations to life.

Let’s plan your next trip to the Disney parks to see this living history in person! With discounts galore (including the month of May!), and FREE dining for kids all year, now is the perfect time to visit the parks. Let’s map out your next Magical Quest today!

  • Celebrate Spring at the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival

Celebrate Spring at the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival

I am heading back to EPCOT’s International Flower and Garden Festival this spring, and I am SO EXCITED for what’s on tap for this event in 2026!  From the bright, vibrant colors to the delicate floral aromas, EPCOT shines throughout this festival. With dozens of Outdoor Kitchens to sample from and a Garden Rocks Concert Series line up to make you feel extra nostalgic, there is so much to do, see, and eat at this festival.

This year, the festival runs from March 4 through June 1, 2026, but there are already topiaries popping up around the park as of mid-February – guests heading to EPCOT between this time and February 23 can catch a rare festival overlap as the International Festival of the Arts wraps up its last week. After a long, cold winter across the US, this floral celebration can’t come soon enough! With discounts galore (including the month of May!), and FREE dining plans for kids all year, now is the perfect time to visit Walt Disney World. Read on to discover the many ways to spring into the new season at EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival.

    Festival Gardens

What would this even be without the gorgeously themed gardens throughout the park? With gardens unique to each country represented in the World Showcase pavilions, as well as fun and creative gardens spread around World Discovery, World Celebration, and World Nature, there are flowers everywhere at this festival. There are several NEW gardens this year, including a Pet-Friendly Garden, Wildlife Crossing Garden – inspired by Hoppers, and a Trendy Tropicals Garden between the Morocco and France Pavilions. I am also intrigued by the new Rain or Shine Fruit Stand (presented by Outshine), which will celebrate the water cycle and how water nurtures crops – located in Communicore Plaza, I am guessing this will by near Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana.

A few of my long-time returning favorite gardens are:

    • Shishi Odoshi Garden in the Japan Pavillion: Made of bamboo, these features of many Japanese gardens create a relaxing sound when they tap together as water flows through them. However, they have a practical gardening purpose – shishi odoshi translates to “deer scaring,” and these beautiful fountains are actually used to scare away pest animals from the garden. I just love having a little Zen moment watching the peaceful kinetic energy of the shishi odoshi, and afterwards taking a stroll through the Bonsai Collection Garden.
    • The Floating Gardens: These are, without a doubt, my favorite gardens at this festival year after year. Drifting on the waterways along the bridge to the World Showcase, more than 170 mini gardens create a beautiful floating rainbow of flowers. The view of the Imagination Pavilion with the gardens in the foreground creates a feeling of whimsy and inspiration that encompasses what that pavilion is all about, and I wish these gardens could be a permanent fixture.
    • English Tea Garden (presenting by Twinings): Meander through the UK pavilion gardens and learn about the history of tea along the way. In years past there has been a garden tour available a few times per day. This short walking tour is free and does require advance in-person sign up – check at the UK pavilion gift shop early in the day to see if this is being offered again in 2026.

Scatted throughout the gardens you’ll find facts about the plants featured, and why they’re located where they are. You’ll also get a chance to learn about the pollinators that are vital to healthy plant life, and our food system.

    Edutainment & Play

Butterfly Landing (presented by AdventHealth) is personal favorite year after year, and a fun activity for everyone in your group. Take a few minutes to visit the Butterfly Landing tent, and learn about several species of butterfly – including malachite and the recognizable monarch. Crucial for pollination and evidence of a biodiverse ecosystem, we should take every opportunity we have to protect and promote a healthy butterfly population and I love that Disney hosts this experience every year.

If you’re ready for a snack, you can head over to The Honey Bee-stro (Hosted by National Honey Board) and learn about helpful bee pollinators while you nosh on a bite from the Outdoor Kitchen next door. The food and drink items on this menu feature (you guessed it) honey! And it’s fun to read a couple factoids while you enjoy some Chicken & Waffles with spicy honey drizzle or a Honey Lager. If you have a kiddo or kid-at-heart with you, you can purchase the festival’s scavenger hunt game, Spike’s Pollen-Nation Exploration ($11.99 +tax), and search for Spike around the World Showcase, adding a sticker to each location on the map. Once complete, return to one of the participating merchandise locations to claim your prize.

This year, kids can run off some extra energy at Playalong Bay (presented by Smuckers). Inspired by Disney’s Yacht Club and Beach Club Resorts, this nautically themed, interactive play area is located near the Imagination Pavilion and available for kids ages 2-12. With some seating, standing tables, and a bit of shade available, this is a great place for parents to stop and recharge while little ones play free for a bit.

I’m always on the lookout for something NEW as these festivals and I am really excited about the Festival Exhibit at CommuniCore Hall this year. It looks like something unique is emerging here, with an indoor garden highlighting nighttime transitions of flowers and insects. After the sun goes down, discover evening enchantment as fireflies and nocturnal blooms show off their glow. I can’t wait!

Fun Foods with a Floral Flair

A stroll around the World Showcase to take in the fragrant blooms and vivid colors is always a little better with a snack or beverage in hand. The Outdoor Kitchens at this festival offer small-to-mid-sized shareable plates of themed bites, and I have spent many a dinner hour hopping from kitchen to kitchen, sampling different bites and sips from around the world. When details are released, the full menus will be found here: EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival – Foodie Guide! A couple of my favorites that I hope will make a return this year are the Avocado Toast with Cherry Tomatoes and Edible Flowers, and the Chicken and Waffles with Hot Honey from Honey Bee-stro!

    Time to Jam!

Each EPCOT festival has a lively concert series to go along with it, and some major blasts from the past have graced the America Pavilions Stage – including the likes of Yellowcard and the Beach Boys (whose line to get in seemed to stretch all the way to Orlando International Airport at the Food and Wine Festival last fall). This year, the Garden Rocks Series has a couple of bands that are sure to draw a crowd, with Simple Plan, Rick Springfield, A Flock of Seagulls, and 98 Degrees all set to perform. Check out the full lineup below:

Avid fans can purchase a Garden Rocks Series Dining Package to guarantee seating for a show. This can be worthwhile for popular acts because some guests do wait in line for hours to see performers like Boyz II Men. Here’s how it works:

    • Purchase a Garden Rocks Dining Package from one of the participating restaurants up to 60 days in advance of your trip through the MyDisneyExperience App. Prices vary for each location, and Dining Plan Credits can be used – more info can be found here: Garden Rocks Concert Series Dining Packages | Walt Disney World Resort
    • On the day of your dining package, enjoy a buffet seating or an appetizer, entrée, dessert, and beverage at your selected restaurant (alcoholic beverages included for guests 21+).
    • You will receive a voucher for reserved seating towards the front of the theater for a specific show time.
    • Bring your voucher to the theater queue for Dining Package Guests (there will be signage) and enjoy the show!
    • These seats are still first come, first serve for those with Dining Packages, so for popular acts, you’ll still want to arrive a little early!

    Topiaries

See some of your favorite characters come alive in a whole new way in these living topiaries spread around the park. Each year we get to enjoy some returning favorites, and also welcome new characters to the event. A few of my personal favorites are Lumiere & Cogsworth, Goofy Blowing Dandelions, Buzz Lightyear near Mission Space, Isabella from Encanto, and Captain Hook vs. Peter Pan.

I am looking forward to seeing Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars return this year for the first time in a quite a while, along with Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc. No doubt these friends are making a comeback to hype up the new lands and attractions coming to Piston Peak in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom, and Monstropolis in Hollywood Studios. (Personally, I am quite excited for these changes, though I do hope MuppetVision 3D is re-homed near Rock’n’Roller Coaster when it’s all said and done.)

Regardless of which characters top your list, the sheer size and detail of these topiaries is breathtaking, and it’s often hard to believe they are made of living flowers and succulents.

Springtime Overlay on Living with the Land

One of my must-do rides each time I visit Walt Disney World is Living with the Land, and it gets one of its many beautiful overlays and theming during the International Flower and Garden Festival. Take a luxurious boat ride through various ecosystems, culminating in everyone’s favorite greenhouse tour. The sets throughout the greenhouses are updated each season, and I’m looking forward to what the team has come up with this year. I’d even be happy with a repeat of last year’s sets inspired by Moana, Tangled, and Princess and the Frog.

A flower blossoms for its own joy.” – Oscar Wilde

Nothing beats a springtime trip to Walt Disney World after a long, cold winter, and EPCOT’s International Flower and Garden Festival is a highlight of these visits. While there’s so much to do, see, and eat at this event, it really is the flowers themselves that bring the festival to life for me. There is plenty of time to plan a trip to this year’s EPCOT’s International Flower and Garden Festival. With discounts galore (including the month of May!), and FREE dining for kids all year, now is the perfect time to visit Walt Disney World. Let’s map out your next Magical Quest today!

  • Creative Fun at the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

Creative Fun at the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

Throughout the seasons at Walt Disney World, there is almost always a festival happening at EPCOT, and my personal favorite kicks off the year each January.  The EPCOT International Festival of the Arts is easily the most interactive and entertaining of the four festivals, and often the most overlooked. With Figment as your guide, experience the full palette of Broadway performances, interactive photo ops, and unique creative activities at EPCOT’s International Festival of the Arts!

    The Art!

The highlight of this festival is simply the art on display – from classic paintings to pressed metal and crafted sculptures, there are so many different types of visual art showcased. Disney invites artists from around the world to create and display art specifically for this event, and you’ll find a plethora of unique pieces to admire.

Artist booths are set up throughout the World Showcase and around World Celebration, allowing guests to chat with artists, watch live paintings, or purchase art to bring home. While there are many pricey, extravagant pieces for sale at this event, you’ll also find small prints and postcards that also make great souvenirs. The artists rotate throughout the festival, with a full listing of dates and locations available here: Artists at 2026 EPCOT Festival of the Arts.

If you are a fan of Disney Parks history you might just see some notable names on this list – Tony Baxter, former VP of Walt Disney Imagineering and the lead creator of classic attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain, will be showcasing his art January 22 – 25!

One of my favorite areas of the festival is the chalk art on the promenade leading into the World Showcase. Rotating pieces line the sides of the walkway, and you can even catch artists hard at work on these. The most eye-catching visual attraction here is the illusion chalk art – carefully step “inside” these illusions and help bring the art to life! These pieces change throughout the festival — with no covering in this area and the occasional Disney Downpour, artists get many blank slates to work with over the course of the event. Guests can return throughout their visit to Disney World to see what new art has been created after a rainstorm.

    The Activities!

NEW! Quest your way through the Fest with the New Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game! Complete the Collection Quest and Ink & Find Scavenger Hunt, and earn complimentary trading cards as you find giant-sized Lorcana cards around the park.

    • Collection Quest: Trade Disney Lorcana cards with other guests at the Lumineers Lounge in Morocco, and receive a limited-edition Magical Places promo card.
    • Ink & Find Scavenger Hunt: Discover larger-than- life trading cards scattered throughout EPCOT. Find the cards, match them to the special ink stickers on your map, and receive a different limited-edition Magical Places promo card.

Wanna play? To take part in the Collection Quest and Ink & Find Scavenger Hunt:

    • Pick up your complimentary Festival Questbook on the bridge to World Showcase, available starting at 9:00 AM (while supplies last).
    • Play! Follow the guide in the Festival Questbook for both activities.
    • When your Questbook is complete, pick up your Magical Places promo cards from the Illumineer’s Lounge in the Morocco Pavilion, or from Figment’s Inspiration Station at The Odyssey.

Based on the crowd reports from today’s opening of the Festival (January 16) it seems like this is going to be a very popular activity and guests should plan to pick up their Questbooks early in the day.

Take a turn with a paintbrush as you join in on the creativity with the Paint by Numbers Mural! This free activity is actually a lot of fun – guests are given a small foam-tip paint brush and a ramakin of paint with a number on the cover. Cast members will then guide you to an empty/accessible area of the massive paint-by-numbers mural, and you can help complete a (team)work of art! You can do this multiple times throughout your visit to EPCOT if you want to contribute to another mural later in your trip – once a wall is completed, it’s replaced with a fresh set of squares featuring a different design.

Scattered throughout the park, guests can step into classic frames to become part of famous works in Artful Photo Ops! Cross the Delaware with George Washington in the America Pavillion, or become part of The Scream near Italy and Germany. There are PhotoPass Cast Members available at these locations for nice shots as well.

Younger guests can also take part in the creativity at the Kids Chalk Art area near the Imagination Pavilion. Available daily from 11am – 5pm, kids can get their creativity flowing and contribute to the Festival of the Arts with their own chalk masterpieces.

As you explore the World Showcase, keep an eye out for some of your favorite characters hidden in each pavilion. In the past I’ve found Luca and Alberto by the water fountain in Italy, Abu in the bazaar in Morocco, and Meeko and Flit from Pocahontas in America. I can sense a recurring medium here – this festival is chalk-full of fun!

My favorite activity at this festival is the Animation Academy offered at the America Gardens Theater. I am a huge fan of this experience at Animal Kingdom, but traveling out to Conservation Station is a bit of a time commitment. Having the class available right in the middle of the World Showcase is a fun and convenient way to learn to draw a classic Disney character from a real Disney animator. This is only offered twice per day at 12:30pm and 1:30pm, so plan ahead! Grab a clipboard, paper, pencil, and maybe a beverage, and create your own souvenir at this unique festival experience.

      The Live Entertainment!

All of the EPCOT festivals include live entertainment, but the International Festival of the Arts really showcases the value of the performing arts more than any other. In years past, this event has featured jazz musicians and acrobatic performances, as well as the Disney on Broadway Series. This year, there is a lineup of musical acts taking the stage in CommunicorePlaza. When you visit this festival, check the lineup of musicians ahead of time, so you don’t miss any of the action. More info will be added to this website as showtimes become available: EPCOT Festival of the Arts

The Disney on Broadway Series is a fun and convenient way to experience the talent of the Broadway artists – all included with the price of your admission to EPCOT! The performers listed below have all been featured in major Broadway productions of Disney classics, and there are a number of new acts this year. Check out the dates below to see who’s on tap for your visit to the International Festival of the Arts!

      The Treats!

While the art and entertainment on display is the real draw of the International Festival of the Arts, no EPCOT event would be complete without the proper snacks to go along with it. Known as Food Studios at this festival, the outdoor kitchens offer beautifully plated bites and sparkling sips that match the artful whimsy of this event. Think — a rainbow flight of hard ciders or a giant mozzarella stick with a “palette” of sauces (yes, even Italy manages to put out a great food item at this festival)!

Check out the foodie guide and menus here: 2026 Food Studios at EPCOT International Festival of the Arts!

Disney always makes a game out of eating at these events, and Festival of the Arts is no different. Pick up your free Festival Passport at any merchandise location in the park, and collect five (5) stamps as you taste the featured dishes on the “Wonderful Walk of Colorful Cuisine.” The “prize” for completing this is usually another snack – last year, guests were given a Figment rice crispy treat for collecting all five stamps.

      Blink and You’ll Miss It!

EPCOT’s International Festival of the Arts only runs for 39 days! That’s right – unlike International Flower & Garden Festival, or International Food & Wine Festival, which both last for about 3 months, guests only have a small window to visit this unique and imaginative event. From the artwork and entertainment to activities and themed snacks, this festival is a showcase of the creative elements that bring Disney itself to life! With the cooler temperatures and kids back in school, mid-January to mid-February is a great time to visit Walt Disney World as an adult group or a solo adventurer. Let’s start planning your next Magical Quest today!
